Year 5 Visit to Winderemere

Year 5 visited the woods and took part in a variety of activities including coin making, weaving, quill writing and a battle re-enactment. All the children got involved and thoroughly enjoyed their time. We began our day learning about the Vikings and what impact they had on Britain.

We learnt all about Viking coinage, observing patterns and examing the delicate coins. We had a go at making our own coins and drawing our own designs We used a furnace style heater to melt the metal, which then was poured into our moulds. Check out our photos.

We had a go at writing like a Viking, but first, we made our own quill and ink. Our ink was made of squashed berries, vinagar and other materials! We had a go at writing our names using runes.

The children loved taking part in a battle re-enactment, we learnt the different commands and how Vikings were trained to form their defence. We learnt about weaving and made our own cloth using sheep’s wool. We found this a calming way to unwind from an action packed day. Have a look to see how we got on!
