Year 5 Science Week

Year 5 have been wonderfully busy as part of British Science Week. We have been taking part in air quality investigations, testing rates of dissolving, learning about connections in the brain and learning about life on farmyards.

We went around school testing different spaces for CO2 levels and particle matter. We noticed that some spaces had higher levels of CO2 and particle matter. Take a look to see us carrying out our investigation.

We learnt that some materials such as salt, sugar and coffee granules dissolve, but chalk, sand and rice does not. We observed the rates of sugar dissolving by comparing the substance in different water temperatures. We noticed that the hottest water, around 60°, dissolves sugar most effectively, whereas colder water takes longer to dissolve sugar. We also kept the amount of water and sugar the same, the cup and thermometer the same to ensure that the investigation was fair.

We were learning about connections of the brain and worked out that all of our brains work differently. We learnt that the left and part of the brain controls the right half of our body and the right part of our brain controls the left part of our body. We talked about the different parts of the brain and how our brains remember knowledge and experiences.

We learnt about the life on a farmyard by discovering what farmers do, as well as entering a Science Week Poster Competition. Check out our photographs below.
