Modern Foreign Languages

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

–  understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
–  speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
– can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
–  discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

At St Bernadette’s languages have an important place in the curriculum.

We aim to ensure that:

–  Pupils develop confidence in communicating in a second language; both speaking and writing
–  Pupils can read and understand spoken French to a level which enables them to conduct conversations
–  Pupils gain an understanding of how other cultures are both different and similar to their own
–  Pupils develop a love of language learning that will stay with them and encourage them to continue to develop their skill
–  Pupils celebrate the many different languages which we have amongst members of our community
– Pupils are proud to share their culture and heritage with their peers and celebrate the worth and uniqueness of them all.
