HRSE

– At St Bernadette’s we have adopted the Life to the Full scheme of work because it meets the statutory requirement for relationship education within a Catholic context.
–  To enhance the areas of living in the wider world that are not covered in Life to the Full, we have use elements from the Jigsaw scheme of work, Bikeability, Road Safety, www.think.gov.uk.
We will have themed days which focus on internet safety, anti-bullying and fairtrade.

HRSE Intent, Implementation, Impact Statement

Intent

At St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School, we believe it is our duty to provide a loving and faithful environment in which we can equip our children with the knowledge, understanding, confidence and skills to rise to the many challenges of living in the world today. HRSE teaching in our school is rooted in the wisdom and doctrines of our Catholic faith and our Gospel values.

“I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.”

John 10:10

Implementation

We have adopted Life to the Full by Ten Ten Resources which is based on the scripture quoted above. Ten Ten is an award-winning Catholic educational organisation that is well-respected and has been approved by our diocese.

We supplement Ten Ten with other materials to ensure that Statutory requirements of PSHE are met, and children are prepared for transitions.

HRSE is taught as explicit lessons as well as through science, RE and other curriculum areas. We believe it is important to work closely with parents to teach children about the rights and responsibilities of human sexuality. Our high expectations of the way we all treat others is reflective of our school Gospel values which are love, faith, stewardship, respect, justice, courage, kindness, joy, humility and service

Impact

We assess pupils’ prior knowledge at the at the beginning of each unit and then reassess it at the end. We provide support where necessary and ensure all children grow in self-respect, understanding and resilience. The HRSE curriculum at St Bernadette’s teaches our pupils how to make good choices as they grow, manage consequences, and develop healthy relationships with family, friends and the wider community. Working closely with parents, we are equipping them with the knowledge and emotional intelligence needed to be joyful, loving and courageous stewards of creation. This ensures that equality is a key principle for all our pupils who learn to treat people fairly and go forth to

promote a society in which everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential – irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, disability, religious beliefs or other beliefs, sexual orientation, age or any other recognised area of discrimination.
