Design Technology

Statement Of Intent

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

–  develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world

– build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users

–  critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

–  understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

At St Bernadette’s design technology has an important place in the curriculum.

–  It is an area to think carefully, using problem solving both individually and collaboratively and build resilience required to tackle a challenge.

–  Design Technology is taught as a stand alone subject but the nature of the topics covered can be used to reinforce Science teaching in some year groups.

–  We look at how design and technology has been used to make the world a better place through a focus on inventions which have changed the world for the better. We also appreciate how good design can inspire awe and wonder and help us feel closer to God in the study of architecture.

–  Our teaching encompasses a broad curriculum so that the children have experience of mechanical systems, electrical systems, structures, cooking, and textiles.

– Our children will follow a process from researching existing products, to designing their own, to making a product and evaluating the outcome.

–  Progression in design technology is assessed through displays, photographic evidence and the pupils’ project workbooks.
